Since no candidate garnered over 50% of the vote there will be a run off election on April 1, 2008 between David Miller and Shelley Denton. Last night’s results should be very telling to all. The district’s voter spoke loud and clear that they are calling for a change. Let’s take a quick review of what happened yesterday.
Shelley Denton ran what conventional wisdom would call the best campaign. She signed up first so her name would be listed first on the ballot. She sent out mailers to the district. She called people in the district. She had signs everywhere including some that appeared strategically placed in front of David Millers. She attended every event and she had the added bonus of name recognition with being the incumbent. With doing all that she still couldn’t capture 50% of the vote.
David Miller’s was a machine too. He was the last one listed on the ballot but received the second most votes and in certain areas actually was the top vote getter. He had signs everywhere. He attended all of the political functions. He brought up the important topics and issues during the election. He even addressed the issues that were being brought up against him. He was the only candidate that had a well thought out plan for the future of the district. He just did everything right. We have to ask though, who was the guy that drew the short straw and was holding your sign at 206 and Macarthur in the rain yesterday morning? If anyone needed to know how committed David’s supporters were, that is all you would have to have seen to know.
Tony Shanbour did a little too little a little to late. He ran a nice campaign but was definitely outclassed by his opponents when it came to running a campaign. We appreciate him giving his time to help bring the issues to the forefront and again thank him for trying to make a difference.
Overall all three candidates did a great job and we thank them for their time. We also thank all those who voted yesterday. For those that voted for a change you won the battle but not the war. There is still work to be done to finish the job. Yesterday will mean nothing if Shelley wins on April 1st. Hopefully Tony and his supporters will throw their support to David Miller. Or maybe we will get lucky and Shelley will show how much she cares about what the voters think and withdraw from the race. It would not only save the district money but it would show that she listened to the 60% that said it was time for a change.
