2007 Year in Review

January 2, 2008

As we start another calendar year we thought it would be a great time to reflect on 2007.  It was a year filled with activity both good and bad.  Hopefully 2008 will bring more good than bad.

'07 ACHIEVEMENTS
The school district continues to receive awards for student and teacher accomplishments.

  • Deer Creek Elementary posted another 1500 API Score.
  • The Deer Creek Cross Country team performed at a record level winning a state championship and producing the 2007 Coach of the year and Runner of the year.
  • The Pom Squad took state and is headed to the Nationals.
  • The Band had two students selected for State as well as a record number of students selected for both the CODA and OBU Honor bands.
  • The district had students receive national recognition for many of their personal achievements outside of the school.
  • 2007 also brought us the start of hopefully a long lasting tradition with the pre-game spirit celebrations at football games.  The Football booster club did a wonderful job of building school spirit.  The Deer Creek School Foundation continued their excellent tradition of helping the district as well.

'07 LOW POINTS
While the year was full of great happenings it was also filled with memories that we won’t soon forget.

  • We saw the entire Tim Draper issue.
  • We saw a teacher arrested and charged with hitting a child.  We saw an individual hired that should never have passed a background check.
  • We saw the school board president Shelley Denton refusing to meet with the parents of Prairie Vale.
  • We continue to see mold issues at Rose Union.
  • In the end, we saw a district become divided.

As for the DCSpost, who would have thought we still be here today.  Over the past year we had 52,645 visits and more posts then we can remember.  Below is the list of the top stories for the year and the top stories per month.

'08 WISH LIST
So as we head into 2008 we developed our own little wish-list for the year.

  1. A new school board member who will remember the people that voted them in.
  2. New schools that won’t be overcrowded on the day that they open.
  3. School Board meetings that the public can actually speak at.
  4. An administration that actually helps the teachers help the students.
  5. A new principal at Prairie Vale.
  6. Students who don’t need remedial classes when they start college.
  7. A school board that works for the people, with the people and are of the people of Deer Creek.

Thanks to everyone for an open dialog in '07 and let us all work together to be great in ’08.

Wishing you all a healthy and content New Year,
Daphne & Rob Talbot
