| When is a D not a D? When it is
an F. |
July 4, 2006
The teachers are in the process of developing a committee. The purpose
is to update the grading policy to one that everyone can agree upon.
We will keep you updated as details are available

When is a D not a D? When it is an F. Confused? So was I at
the last School Board meeting when they where talking about the
grading procedures for the high school. Apparently any student with
a D average will it changed automatically to an F at the end of
the semester. But if the student logs enough hours of tutoring they
avoid the F. Why must everyone reinvent the wheel?
The reason we even bring this up is the fact that the teachers
would like to see this policy abolished. In effect the policy has
hindered the teachers ability to help the kids that really
need or want the help. The reality of it is, the student with a
D only needs to show that they went for tutoring to avoid receiving
a failing grade. How they actually perform is of no consequence.
So these kids will go to teachers to take up chair time
that could have gone to another student that really wanted the tutoring.
After about 30 minutes of spirited debate the School Board threw
it back at the teachers, saying "come back with a positive
solution that reinforces good behavior instead of rewarding bad
behavior." What the heck does that mean?
Heres a thought. Just abolish the policy and go back to a
normal grading scale that, Oh By The Way, reinforces good behavior
and does not reward bad behavior. We would think the teachers would
have a better concept of who should pass and who should fail. Silly
us.
