We were speechless in response to the Superintendent's raise.
It seems others were too.

No, it was not the right decision. We should have a say so in the
renewing of a contract or a raise or car allowance for the Superintendent.
I was told that the board had done these things in a hush-hush manner.
It's my understanding our so called Superintendent has made several
bad decisions in her role as Superintendent. And now the board has
made a very, very bad decision in renewing her contract and giving
her a raise. We need a Superintendent with a backbone that isn't
afraid to stand up to the board. We need a new Superintendent!!
I'm not pleased with the board's decision to renew her contract!!!

The Board decisions are a mixed bag. While their decisions are
open to the public (during the school board meetings), their discussion
of the topic is not. All discussions about any school personnel
are done during the school board meeting executive session which
is not open to the public. A report of the executive session is
then given once the school board meeting returns to open session.

Personally, I wouldn't want that job for $200,000 especially at
Deer Creek. All the headaches you have to deal with! Everyone should
be in a Superintendent's shoes for a day and then decide whether
it is worth the $105,000. And no, I have no close ties to the Superintendent!

Thanks for your post. There is no question that every Superintendent
of every school district has to deal with headaches. I bet if you
look close enough you will see that the Principals and Teachers
deal with 100 times the headaches at less salary. If you look even
closer you will find that some of the Superintendents headaches
are self created. One last question, when did accountability become
a headache?

It's a shame that the board allowed her this much money. I've worked
for DC for long time and don't even make poverty wages. The ten
cent raise we got really was an insult.

I think it's very exciting as it indicates our teachers will also
be getting a much needed raise! If we can give our Superintendent
such a healthy salary, we must be doing much better than in years
past. Teachers, start planning where youll spend your extra
10%! (unless they lessen the raise and give you a car allowance
also.) Perhaps the district could get a deal on a fleet of nice
"Antler Blue" cars.

I thought the Superintendent was already driving a district vehicle.
Why would there be a need to give a car allowance if that is the
case? Do you have any information on this? The contract extension
and the raise tell me that our current Board of Education - or at
least those that voted in favor of these items - feel that Mrs.
Wilkinson has done an above average job. I'm blown away by this
action. It would be great if someone could explain to the hard working
patrons and teachers of this district how they came to this decision.
Quite frankly, I don't know where they found the money since the
budget is so tight and all. At least that's what they've told the
patrons. Whatever the case, I disagree vehemently with their decision.
All I can say is do your homework before you vote to fill the vacancy
on the school board in February.

They discussed the whole issue about the district car at a recent
board meeting. I wasnt paying much attention since it seemed
like such a non-issue. I guess Ive learned my lesson. The
best I can remember was that the old car was in such bad repair
it wasnt safe to take on long trips. I guess they saw it would
be easier to pay an allowance then buy a new vehicle.
This entire situation goes back to the current board not being
honest and open about the entire fiscal situation the school is
in. No need to worry about being fiscally responsible, the board
can always have Jan Larsen go around and promote more fundraising.

Deer Creek School Board members voted to extend Superintendent Rebecca
Wilkinsons contract through the 2008-09 school year and give
her a $2650 raise bringing her salary to $105,000. In addition she
will receive an annual car allowance of $7500.
Were Speechless.
Do you think this was the right decision?
