Last year Mr. Ottinger lead 50+ kids on a whirl wind
Washington DC tour. Our then 7th grader went on it.
We were thrilled with what she learned and with how
happy she was when she came home.
Our hats off to Mr. Ottinger for going above and beyond
the usual monument and museum stops. The kids took part
in the changing of the wreath at the tomb of the Unknown
Soldier, and even toured the White House.
The kids were too busy to get in trouble. During down
time, they are counted and watched. While in the hotel,
there is a security company that enforced lights outs
and kept the kids in their rooms.
By the end of the trip, the students had an extraordinary
learning experience that helped them understand their
roles as US citizens. The teachers keep up a running
commentary and amazingly enough much of what they said
stuck. We applaud Mr. Ottinger, Nancy Vasso, and Kristi
Kringlen for the wonderful job they did making the trip
both educational and fun.
It was a great segue into 8th grade American history.
Our daughter was tickled pink when she discovered that
she could relate what she saw on the trip with what
she was hearing in class. Because of last year's trip,
I know she will get more out of this year's history
class. That was an extra bonus we weren't expecting!
If you've been thinking about signing up your child
for the trip, go ahead and send in the papers. The itinerary
may include:
- Visiting the Jefferson, FDR, Vietnam & Lincoln
Memorials
- Touring the Smithsonian Museum
- Visiting the White House (another bonus thanks to
Mr. Ottinger!)
- Being part of changing the wreath at the tomb of
the Unknown Soldier
- Walking in the footsteps of President Lincolns
last day by exploring the Fords Theater &
Petersen House.
This year Mr. Ottinger has made plans for 7th and 8th
grade students to go back to Washington DC. So far there
are 46 kids signed up. If you would like more information,
contact Mr. Ottinger at ottingerm@deercreek.k12.ok.us
or visit his webpage at http://teacherweb.com/OK/DeerCreekMiddleSchool/Ottinger/h3.stm.
Thanks again to Mr. Ottinger and Principal Jones for
providing this educational opportunity for the students.
