A lot of comments on fundraising.  I'm right in the middle of a fundraising project for the Deer Creek District.  I guess we need to remember that fundraising is not mandatory. You can always throw these forms away.  What is the real issue here?....is it the annoying fundraising forms or is it Deer Creek Schools needs another way of obtaining money for all their schools.

I am at loss of what else we can do when the schools can't even provide a decent place for graduation, or any of the funding for proms and after proms.  Someone more creative and less tired than me needs to come up with a plan of getting commercial businesses at Deer Creek.  That would create a better tax base for our district. If parents don't want any businesses in the district than we are left with asking for volunteer handouts.

I know they have a chamber of commerce but I don't know the extent of it's organizational state right now.  I want my children to have everything that keeps them competitive with other good schools, that is why I have written so many checks this year (for some reason this year has been extremely expensive) and I will continue until the last one is out of HS.  Maybe I'm part of the problem but I want my children and my children's teachers to have the tools necessary to make a difference in their education.  Do the teachers and schools need all the smart boards-buses-computers-etc? That's up for debate.  But I'm not smart enough to say that they don't.

Fundraising is an issue that is never going to go away.  One way the school district can make it less painful is to document where the money is actually going.  Once people recognize the need they are more likely to help with the cause.  The problem remains that fundraising dollars are still at times being spent frivolously and with no accountability.  The parents and patrons of the district should be commended for their generosity.  The best way for the school district to show their appreciation is to list out where all of the money went.

The easiest way to remove the financial burden from the patrons of Deer Creek is to increase the commercial tax base of the area.  Anytime you can increase the tax revenue without increase the student population everybody wins.  If it is done correctly, an increase in business does not have to have an adverse affect on an area.  That is why a group of individuals decided to revitalize the Deer Creek Chamber of Commerce.

As for the Deer Creek Chamber of Commerce it is moving along slowly but steadily.  The Chamber is currently involved politically with the land for sale at 206th and Rockwell.  There were two bids submitted for the land.  One for a company’s headquarters, the other was for another housing development.  The chamber is supporting the company’s headquarters not because they are against housing, but because of the potential tax windfall for the school and the area if the company headquarters is relocated to Deer Creek.

Many people have asked why they should join the chamber as an individual or if their business was not located in the Deer Creek area?  By joining you would be providing financial support for the chamber.  The chamber would have a better chance of attracting new business to the Deer Creek area with the proper resources.  The commercial side of Deer Creek is going to grow.  Wouldn’t it be nice if we developed a plan to shape the growth so that everyone wins?

And then today.....a note came home reading: "Oops! We sent out Jump Rope for Heart flyers in error!  We are not participating this year.  The flyers should have been sent to another school, not DCES.  Sorry for the confusion, you are more than welcome to send the form back to school so we could return them. " Maybe someone read the DCSPost!  Don't worry - they told the kids to return the money they had already collected.  We are participating in Pennies For Pasta instead.....guess the school receives better prizes for this one?!

So what or who does the DCES fundraiser support?  Our latest begging for money!  FUNDRAISER # 5 million for the year!

…and now we are participating in Jump Rope For Heart.  I love the organization and being involved.  But, if the PTO cannot raise one penny or acquire one thing without it being called fundraising...why is that not the same for the schools?  DCES sent home a note and the kids are supposed to find sponsors - yes monetary.   In the note it states that the school earns gift certificates for PE equipment.  I am thrilled for that; however, I am sick of begging for money from all of our family and friends.  AND...I am tired of the inconsistency with rules!
