Update: The DCS Post would like to award itself an antler point for bringing concerned parents together with the Deer Creek School System for a speedy resolution. We would also like to thank the Parent for the initial Parent Post that got the ball in motion. Below is a Deer Creek School Safety Improvements at DCPV press release.

Safety Improvements at DCPV

Mrs. Anderson and her Safety Committee consisting of parent volunteers and teachers have been working hard this summer to improve the safety of our school. DCPV has made the following improvements for the 2006-2007 school year.

*They have developed new procedures for drop off, pick up, and entry into the school.

*The parking lot has been painted clearly defining the car lane and designated stop areas for cars.

*Window clings will be given to the legal guardians at Meet the Teacher to help identify those approved to pick up the students.

*Eight surveillance cameras will be added throughout the school.

*The sign in book will remain in the office with the exception of large events where it will be located in the hall and monitored by school personnel.

*All back doors will remain locked including the back door leading to the portables. Teachers will let students in the building with a key. The portables will be used for labs this year so there will be significantly less traffic between the portables and main building.

Parents will be given guide lines on the new drop off and pick up procedures at Kindergarten Parent Night on August 15th, Meet the Teacher on August 16th and New Parent Orientation on August 22nd. The safety committee will be conducting surveys throughout the year to continue to improve our schools safety. Please direct any questions or concerns to Mrs. Anderson at andersonm@deercreek.k12.ok.us or Kailee Zehrung, DCPV Safety Committee Chairman, at DCPVSSC@yahoo.com.

A group of Parents met with Superintendent Wilkinson to discuss the safety issues at Prairie Vale. The purpose of the meeting was to clarify the concerns of the parents and collectively work together for resolutions ... see original Parent Post >>

The Main Topics of the conversation were

  • Placement of the Sign In/Out Sheet
  • Doors on the Perimeter of the Building
  • Parking Lot for Drop Off and Pick Up

Proposed Solutions:

  • The Sign In/Out Sheet will remain in the office at all times. The only exception will be on days of major events. Then the Sign In/Out sheet will be in the hallway with a school official monitoring it.
  • The Blinds in the office will remain open at all times. The only exception would be in the case of privacy for a student or such. In the event that the blinds need to be closed there will be a school official outside the office monitoring traffic.

As for the doors on the perimeter and parking lot issues Superintendent Wilkinson and the parents agreed that these issues should be handled by the Safety Committee for Prairie Vale. The goal was to have a safety committee meeting ASAP to try and resolve some of these issues before school started. Anyone wishing to help with the Safety Committee can contact Superintendent Wilkinson to volunteer.

DCSpost.com would like to thank all those involved. We extend a special thank you to Superintendent Wilkinson for her involvement with these issues. We will check in over the next few months and let you know the progress made for resolving these issues ... see original Parent Post >>
