Why are we so critical of the board? Here are a few
reasons we find it difficult to take the board seriously.
Situation 1
A local organization wanted to hold a public forum
with the candidates running for county commissioner
at the high school.
Board Response
Not to get involved with local politics with the
fear of backlash from the winning candidate. Then a
few days before the runoff election a board member praised
the current county government at the board meeting.
It Makes You Wonder
We still have yet to figure out how an outside organization
holding a public forum at a school would be misconstrued
as support any candidate. If anything you would think
all of the candidates would have been happy to address
the patrons of Deer Creek. One real positive that came
out of the forum was the candidates had a better understanding
of what Deer Creek was all about. Ray Vaughn went on
to win the election and is looking forward to working
with the Deer Creek community and school district. Just
imagine what might had been if the forum was at the
school.
Situation 2
The school district was presented with a situation
that could possibly have been deemed unethical and maybe
even illegal.
Board Response
A board member stated that the school district would
not investigate anonymous complaints.
It Makes You Wonder
Beside the fact that the board knew who was reporting
the incident, this was a peculiar response considering
the school district did indeed look into the complaint.
We dont support unsubstantiated accusations either,
but with this one, there was enough facts to merit an
investigation. It was was asked why anyone would want
to tarnish the career of an individual. The point was
not to tarnish anyones career, but to correct
a wrong, no matter who made the mistake.
Situation 3
The policy of requiring kids with a D average to
go for tutoring or have the grade automatically become
an F.
Board Response
A board member stated that the kids should earn
their grade or they wouldnt be eligible to fight
in a war.
It Makes You Wonder
It would be nice if there were a deep rooted meaning
with this. Unfortunately, to us, it makes no sense.
Absolutely kids should earn their grades. If they earned
a "D", then let that be their grade. If they
earned a "F", then let that be their grade.
As for servicing in the military, how does that apply
to public school grading policies? Remember this person
and their bizarre logic is making decision affecting
your childs education.
Situation 4
A parent brought up concerns about the growth of
the school district.
Board Response
A board member said "Be happy you are not in
a large school because they have gangs."
It Makes You Wonder
This gives new meaning to school colors. Aside from
the fact that the response totally side stepped the
issue, think about the person making the statement.
Remember they and their illogical non sequiturs are
making decisions affecting your child's education.
Conclusion
The sad part is we can go on and on with example after
example, but we think you get the picture.
- Is this what we would expect from your leaders?
- Yes we know that Deer Creek Schools has received
outstanding test scores. On the other hand, should
we excuse unethical behavior and bad decisions because
this year or last year we had good test scores?
- Isn't school supposed to be forming a solid base
for them to build their future on? How solid will
that base be if issues are side stepped today?
