Parent Post
An excerpt from a previous post, "Deer Creek High
School, the Forgotten School, ...we feel the High School
has been neglected for far too long" FYI: The Deer
Creek High School received the super grant offered by
the foundation last year. This will make two years in
a row that the high school has been granted a large
sum of money. I do not see how they should be seen as
"Forgotten".
Our Reply
One of the main points in the Forgotten School
article compared where the High School stood with the
technology found in the other schools. Our kids are
fortunate to have the exposure to technology on the
lower levels but it will all be for naught if it isnt
in the high school. That was the point we were trying
to make. We were not insinuating that the DCSF had not
contributed to the high school. We commend the DCSF's
last two years of generosity towards the high school.
On a side note, the PTO in conjunction with Cheeseburger
in Paradise is having a fund raiser in two weeks. The
proceeds from the event will go towards technology in
the high school. The event will be held on Friday, October
27. For more information visit the special announcement
section of www.deercreek.k12.ok.us/hs/.

Violence
Recently Deer Creek High School Students have been getting
some unfavorable publicity. Understanding that not every
student is involved with the following incidents but
they are all under the dark cloud caused by these situations.
- Two girls were involved in an altercation in the
hallway that became physical and violent.
- Several High School students were involved with
throwing gum, tampons, and other objects at Middle
School students on a bus.
- During an at home football game, a group of students
were verbally and physically abusive to the visiting
marching band, dumping a soda on one of the members.
In all three separate and unrelated incidents the school
district took the some measures to handle each situation.
But the question remains why did this happen? How does
a school district that prides its self on its image
come to this? We dont have the answers but we
certainly have seen some trends that may have led to
this behavior.
Improvements or Lack Thereof
While it is exciting to see all of the improvements
happening at the elementary and middle school levels,
what happens when our kids reach the High School that
is woefully behind in technology and classroom upgrades?
Integrating the Smart Boards and new technology is exciting
and can only help our children. But what happens when
they get to the High School and there is nothing? Now
we applaud all those at the lower grades who are making
all this happen, but are we sure we are going about
this the right way? Are we winning battles but losing
the war? It is time for somebody to step back at look
at the big picture, so all our schools work together
and provide our children with a stellar education as
they move from one school to the next..
Conclusion
One cant help but wonder if there is some jealousy
being felt by the students in high school. Or maybe
they feel we don't care so why should they. The aforementioned
acts may have been the results of some poor decisions
made by a few individuals or just cries for attention
by individuals who feel forgotten. Either way we hope
somebody figures it out before it is too late.
