Is the state is under funding the school by the tune of $1000/student?

  • The state uses a funding formula to determine what each school district is going to receive per student.
  • The more a school district receives per student for local property taxes, the less it gets in state money.

So the truth is all districts are slated to get the same dollars per student. It is just the money may not be coming from the same sources. Also the wealthier residential and commercial school districts may be self-funded and receive more money per student then the state formula recommends. For the record it is estimated in about 7-10 years the Deer Creek School District will be receiving so much in local property taxes that it will be self-funded and not receive any money from the state.

How is the Money Divided?

The general fund is just one of the four different funds in the school district. It covers the day to day operations.

If the schools are in such desperate need for money, why doesn’t the board look elsewhere in the budget to fund the schools? Or is the truth the school district is in need of better money management?
